Frequently asked questions

Which browsers are supported?

Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers — Edge, Brave, Arc, Opera. Firefox and Safari aren't supported due to how they handle tab audio capture.

What audio quality can I expect?

Audio is captured directly from the tab's audio pipeline, not through a microphone. What the tab plays is what you get. Supports sample rates up to 96kHz.

What file formats can I export?

WAV and MP3. You can pick your sample rate before exporting.

Does Sample access my browsing data or microphone?

No. It only captures audio from the tab you choose to record. No microphone access, no browsing history, no data from other tabs. Everything stays local.

Is Sample free?

Yes. Free, no ads, no accounts.

What are the minimum requirements?

Windows 10 or later, or a recent version of macOS. A reasonably up-to-date Chromium-based browser should work fine.

Where are my recordings stored?

Locally in your browser's storage. Nothing is uploaded or sent anywhere. Recordings persist until you delete them.

Can I record in mono?

Yes. You can choose between mono and stereo capture in the settings.

Does it work offline?

The extension itself runs locally — no servers, no uploads. You just need internet for whatever tab you're recording from.

How do I get started?

Install from the Chrome Web Store, open a tab with audio, click the Sample icon, hit record. Trim and export when you're done.
